Hi-Level Mezzanines and Concepts Group create a highly functional facility for a handmade furniture manufacturer

The Client

Concepts Group have been creating effective, highly functional storage systems and interior environments since 1985 and Hi-Level Mezzanines have been working in partnership with Concepts Group for many years. For this project, we teamed up with one of their three divisions, Storage Concepts, which focuses on racking systems and mezzanine floors.

The client is a renowned designer and maker of handmade furniture who specialises in handmade English kitchen furniture. They have showrooms in several key locations across the UK, one in the USA and plans to expand further across the globe to Australia.

The Challenge

The client had secured a new building in Leicestershire as part of their ongoing business expansion plans to become one of three manufacturing facilities for their business.

As a former chequebook facility for one of the ‘big four’ UK banks the new building came with an interesting history and a requirement for a substantial amount of work before the new owners could move in.

The challenge was to transform the building and create a new highly functional facility for the client’s furniture production that would allow for their current business operations and planned expansion. This included not one, but two mezzanine floors that would maximise the space available in the building.

The Criteria

While the building was handed over to Storage Concepts completely empty, it did contain a large, fixed structure on the ground floor which was eventually to be used to house the paint spray line for the client.

One of the two new mezzanine floors installed by Hi-Level was built immediately next to the structure and following checks of the roof of the structure by independent engineers, this was then decked to match the new floor and create a seamless working area on the mezzanine level. The original structure’s roof has a lower loading capacity than the new mezzanine floor area so painted zones were applied to provide clear demarcation of the two areas and ensure the safety of the floor for the client.

With two mezzanine floors being installed on this project the Hi-Level team had to work efficiently to get the first handed over to the Storage Concepts team for follow on works. While Storage Concepts installed the electrics, fire rating and fire alarm system on the first of the mezzanines the Hi-Level team began construction on the second mezzanine. The Storage Concepts team then followed completing both floors with goods lifts for easy movement of the client’s products and materials between the ground and mezzanine floors.

The Result

With Hi-Level and Storage Concepts completing this project in Spring 2024 the client has now moved in and is fully operational in their new building.

The two new mezzanine floors have provided them with ample space for their current requirements as well as the potential to develop the site further by adding a second tier to the larger of the two mezzanines at a later date.

With a thriving international business and plans to expand further we hope to be able to revisit this site in the future and provide them with the next phase of their mezzanine requirements to match their ever-growing business.
